- Adopt model & tool “nutrition labels.” For each model, log purpose, provider, version, data provenance claims, evaluation results, known failure modes, and human-in-the-loop points.
- Stand up human review gates for brand voice, legal claims, likeness/IP rights, and sensitive-topic safety—especially for auto-generated creative.
- Codify data provenance for assets and audiences; require vendors to attest to lawful basis, licensing, and opt-out handling.
- Evaluate before you scale. Pilot standardized tests for accuracy, bias, toxicity, misinformation leakage, and safety; re-test on model/tool upgrades.
- Write an incident lexicon & playbooks (e.g., hallucination, off-brand persona, discriminatory targeting) with containment and disclosure steps.

Advertising is a team sport—agencies, DSPs, SSPs, studios, model providers, measurement partners. The Playbook’s biggest cultural shift is asking marketers to treat AI risk like ad-fraud or brand safety: a supply-chain problem. That means pushing governance obligations upstream (training-data claims, eval transparency) and downstream (usage constraints, labeling, takedown SLAs). IAB’s research shows only a third of orgs have formal governance tools in place; that’s your opportunity to win trust while competitors hope for the best.
Make It Real in 60 Days: A Sequenced Action Plan
- Week 1–2: Publish a one-page AI policy for marketing. Define allowed vs. restricted use cases, review gates, escalation contacts, and vendor requirements. Socialize it in stand-ups and with external partners.
- Week 2–4: Run an AI tabletop exercise. Simulate a hallucinated claim or likeness-rights complaint with creative, media, legal, and security. Capture gaps; convert fixes into checklists.
- Week 3–6: Stand up evaluation & documentation. Choose test batteries that reflect your risks (bias, toxicity, misinformation), tie them to a model/tool registry, and automate storage of results.
