Consumers Are Losing Faith in Big Tech’s AI Rush: “Innovation Is Moving Too Fast”

Table of Contents

A new Deloitte survey reveals deepening public distrust toward generative AI and the tech companies racing to deploy it. While many consumers enjoy the benefits of AI-powered tools, a growing majority now fear misuse, privacy violations, and the erosion of critical thinking skills.

The findings highlight a widening trust gap: consumers want innovation, but they increasingly doubt whether Big Tech is delivering it responsibly.

Deloitte’s 2025 Connected Consumer Survey

  • 82% of generative AI users and experimenters say the technology could be misused — up from 74% the previous year.
  • 74% fear generative AI is eroding critical thinking skills.
  • One-third of users have encountered incorrect or misleading information when using generative AI.
  • 24% report having experienced data privacy issues with the technology.

Rising Privacy and Security Fears

Concerns about how tech companies handle personal data have surged. In just one year, the percentage of respondents worried about data privacy and security jumped to 70% from 60%.

Additionally:

  • 47% experienced at least one type of digital security failure in the past year (device hack, account breach, or stolen identity).
  • 58% encountered at least one scam attempt, including phishing, deepfakes, voice cloning, or ransomware.
  • More than half of respondents say they are not at all willing to share personal financial, communication, or biometric data — even if it means better digital experiences.

Trust in Tech Providers Hits New Low

Only 27% of respondents say they have “high” or “very high” trust that their tech providers are keeping their data secure. Meanwhile, 48% feel the benefits they receive from online services outweigh their privacy concerns — a sharp drop from 58% in 2024.

The survey also shows broad skepticism about the pace and motives of innovation:

  • 77% believe tech companies are more focused on outpacing competitors than solving real user problems.
  • 69% think innovation is happening too quickly, without enough attention to risk mitigation.

When asked which improvements they want most in their tech devices, respondents ranked improved security and privacy as their top priority.

Why This Growing Distrust Matters

Consumers are sending a clear message: they value the intelligence and personalization that generative AI can deliver, but they are increasingly uncomfortable with how fast it’s being rolled out and how their data is being used and protected.

The survey underscores a societal shift. Years of high-profile data breaches, AI hallucinations, and concerns over deepfakes and misuse have created widespread skepticism. Many now view Big Tech not just as innovators, but as entities that may prioritize speed and profit over responsible stewardship of personal information.

This erosion of trust could slow adoption, reduce willingness to share data, and ultimately impact long-term customer loyalty and growth for AI-driven platforms.
