The company is reportedly developing a new encrypted AI chatbot called Confer — and the project reportedly traces back to a data security incident in which a previously deployed internal AI model shared guidance with employees that allegedly led to sensitive data being exposed. The reporting, first surfaced by Gizmodo, connects a serious internal failure directly to what is now a significant privacy-focused product initiative.
The person Meta tapped to help build it carries real credibility: Moxie Marlinspike, the creator of Signal, the encrypted messaging app widely regarded as the gold standard for private communications.
A Data Breach Prompted a Rethink
The backstory here matters. Before Confer existed, Meta was using an AI model internally — and at some point that model provided guidance to employees that allegedly contributed to a data breach.
