The Safety-vs-Privacy Trap and Why Businesses Are Caught in It
Meta’s move isn’t happening in a vacuum. Lawmakers worldwide are pushing platforms harder on child safety and national security. Florida’s recent flirtation with encryption backdoor mandates shows the direction some U.S. states are testing. The UK’s Online Safety Act and EU’s DSA already treat unencrypted messaging as a compliance checkbox. By killing the feature on Instagram, Meta is aligning itself with the “scan everything” camp — at least on this one app.
Yet the company keeps default E2EE on Messenger (with caveats) and WhatsApp. The message to users is clear: privacy is now a product segmentation strategy. Want real protection? Pay with your attention elsewhere in the family of apps, or switch platforms entirely.
